SUPERLASER Welcomes Nobel Laureate Professor sir Konstantin Novoselov For A Lecture at NCSR “Demokritos”

A few weeks ago, the SUPERLASER project had the pleasure of welcoming Professor Konstantin Novoselov, Nobel Laureate in Physics, to the National Centre for Scientific Research “Demokritos” (NCSR “Demokritos”), following an invitation by Dr Maria Vasilopoulou, Coordinator of the SUPERLASER project.

During his visit, Professor Novoselov delivered a plenary lecture titled Materials for the Future, in which he explored how the discovery, growth and precise control of novel materials can reveal new physical phenomena and open pathways towards transformative technologies.

A key theme of the lecture was the potential of materials that can be grown and stabilised in metastable regimes. Such non-equilibrium states can enable structures, functionalities and physical properties that are inaccessible under conventional equilibrium conditions, substantially broadening the landscape for both fundamental scientific discovery and future technological applications.

Connecting materials discovery with the SUPERLASER vision

The themes explored during the lecture closely resonate with the scientific vision of SUPERLASER, particularly its focus on advanced materials engineering and materials-by-design approaches.

SUPERLASER investigates advanced perovskite superlattices and tailored material architectures with the aim of developing new concepts for coherent and electrically driven light-emitting technologies. Professor Novoselov’s lecture highlighted the broader importance of precisely controlled crystal growth, unconventional material architectures and interdisciplinary research in enabling new opportunities for future photonic and optoelectronic technologies.
